Railway photography - historic and contemporary (page last updated 29th January 2012)

1) The SLS and contemporary railway photography

Many of our members continue to photograph the contemporary railway scene on both Network Rail and other lines in the UK and overseas and these photographs are often used in the Journal. The Network Rail Guidance on UK rail photography is avaialble here (external site) and the webmaster of this site also has a page covering railway photography . The SLS also has an additional "members only" Yahoo Group Forum on-line. Several additional photograph albums are included there covering both contemporary and historic railway activity.

2) The SLS historic photograph collections

The SLS has two major holdings of photographic material.

Obtained from a wide number of sources, the Society has a unique collection of over 10,000 negatives covering pre-grouping, grouping and nationalised eras of British railways and many from overseas railways. In addition our Society Library also holds over 80,000 prints covering railways which can be made available; however this web page concentrates on the negative collection listings.

The Society holds the Cam' Camwell railway archive and listings of the 'Cam' bequest are being added as they are being completed.

The photograph shows GWR locomotive number 2925, St Martins' Hall at Plymouth on 10 August 1925 ans and is a sample from the collection - List No 24. Neg. No 18115..

The lists currently available, covering some 6,000 subjects, are set out at (3) below. Tthese can be obtained from Bradstones, Charlton Road, Holcombe, Bath, Somerset, BA3 5ER. England. For copies of up to four lists please send a self-addressed C5 (229mm x 162mm) envelope with postage to the value of 100g (UK large letter rate). Where more than four lists are requested please send a cheque/P.O. for £1.00. For each additional list thereafter please add 10p per list up to total value of £3.50. A CD which includes all of the published lists Nos. 1 – 45 inclusive, 49, 50, C1, C2 and C3 is also available price £3.50 inclusive of postage and packing. Payment may be made by Postage stamps, cheque or Postal Order payable to The Stephenson Locomotive Society.
